May 7th, 2009, Summer
Thunderstorm
On this day, myself and a friend were driving out to Wallops Island,
Virginia (far eastern VA) to cover the NASA launch at the facility
there. On the way there, a pretty stought storm forumed and we
watched it, and luckily enough had time to do a little chasing.
At one point (see the first photo below) we observed a rotating wall
cloud and thought we could possibly even see a funnel or tornado.
It looked as though the rotation was over water, but we still attempted
to call in the report, but unfortunately the cell coverage in that area
was very poor. Interestingly enough, as you can see the storm
reports map below, no significant reports were made with this
storm. That may have been in large part due to the very low
population in this area of eastern Maryland and Viriginia. I also
wish I had my zoom lens with this storm as I could have seen more
detail in photo no.1 After the storm we continued on to Wallops
Island were the NASA rocket launch was canceled....due to weather
(surprise, surprise).
