STORM CHASING VEHICLE - Chevrolet Blazer (2002 & 2003 chase season)
Starting in 2002, I began chasing the Great Plains with the Weathervine crew (Jeff Gammons and Chris Collura). In that year and the following year, we rented a Chevrolet Blazer 4dr. Two different trucks from two rentel agencies. The Chevolet Blzer was a vehicle all of use were familiar with. I of course, had a 1983 which served me very well in 1997 and 1998. Jeff and Chris had chase in Dave Cornwell's 1998 Blazer many times both in tornado alley and during multiple hurricanes. They proved to be a very rugged vehicle and did well chasing.During the 2002 season however, we pushed that rental about as far a vehicle could go. It sustained hail damage, which we did try to avoid, and we broke the suspension (as it drooped on onside a little). The vehicle also was dirty and we had managed to put about 9,000 miles on it in 20 days of use. When it was returned to the rental agency, we knew that this vehicle would see no more clients, and was likely to head to the auction block. We had full insurance and liability coverage on it of course.
Below are some selected pictures of the two Blazer's we've use in 2002 and 2003. Both were 4.3L V6 engines with Automatic transmissions and 4x4 four wheel drive.
