March 1 - 2, 2009 - Winter Storm
2002 chaser header

This was a shot taken around 8am on Monday morning (March 2nd, 2009) between Bowie and Upper Marlboro Maryland.  The snow fall rates were peaking here, and visibility was at a minimum.  Below you can see more shots from this location, but even here you can see the incredible amount of snowfall.
Around 1am or so, on our way back from the Eastern most point of our journey, we stopped and found this formation roadside around Queenstown.  This was caused by drifting snow, and collected in this very unique shelf formation.  Aaron is sticking his hand out to give scale to this 2 or 3 foot ledge.  This shot also appeared on WUSA Ch.9 on Tuesday morning (Thanks Kim Martucci).

Let's start off with the day before the "winter chase", Saturday February 28th.  After a full day of watching the models the evening came with a little bit of snow and sleet during the evening.  That was just the first wave, and wasn't expected to do much.  The next day, I continued to watch the models, with some doubt as too the significance of the system.  It's March after all and DC doesn't see much snow in March.  I started coordinating for my chase and getting the gear ready.  Wasn't sure exactly how I was going to execute this chase yet, but by noon, I was pretty much convinced I wanted to go out.  I especially felt that either southern Maryland or Virginia was going to be the best bet.

Around 4pm my chase partner (and apprentice) Aaron arrived and we had to quickly decide our mode of transportation.  I wanted to use the mobile weather station I had been slowly building, and couldn't with the current vehicle choose..a convertible; the cloth roof wouldn't support the weather pack.

We got on the road around 5pm and headed first to Bethesda.  At that point we really didn't think we would be outside the DC area.  His forecast, and apprehension of leaving the area kept us local.  But we started to stream live video as the snow began to fall and arriving in Bethesda things were going well.  However, we did encounter an issue when the DC to AC inverter wires worked loose and crossed blowing the car's fuse.  We didn't notice it right away.  Both of us were getting hungry by this time (9pm) and we headed for Subway on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda.  That's when we started goofing around and streaming video while in subway eating.  That's was pretty fun.

After that we headed back to Gaithersburg for some repairs, and after about 1 1/2 hours of working on the problem, we fixed the issue and started streaming video again.  But by this time it was 12am and the snow began falling again (it had stopped briefly around 8pm).  We decided to go west to catch some of the heavier snow fall.  That took us to Laurel.  There we rested and in the morning we were a little worried about not seeing a significant event.  So at that point, after discussing some options, we headed south through Prince Georges County down toward Bowie.  There we did a live shot for WUSA Ch.9 and interview on-air.  Snow was really coming down by this point, and snow was stacking up fast.   A little later in the morning we did another live shot, this time while driving west on US 50 toward Annapolis.  I wanted a shot of the Bay Bridge, so that is why we went there. Of course I didn't exactly plan it good, and we had to go across the bridge too.  I wasn't really worried....the bridge was well treated.  Visibility on the water was zero...even though it was OK for driving.  Actually seems as though the fog was from snow hitting the water and creating a little steam...which hovered just above the water.

Once across the bay, we decide to head a little further west...following a strong (incomplete)
